When a baby has a fever it's time to get the facts. Fevers can be dangerous, but when properly managed, are not always a cause to go to the hospital.
First, check the baby's temperature. Using a armpit electric thermomteter is the easiest for younglings.
Dangerously high temps-
Age 2 months and younger: 100.1
Age 3-6 months: 101
6 months-2 years: 103
When baby has a temp, make sure they are getting hydrated. If the 'soft spot' in the front center of the skull(near/above forhead) is sunken in at all baby needs more liquid (breastmilk preferably, but purified water will do in a pinch)
Lark had a terrible fever last night and here is what we did to decreae her temp by 3 degrees.
First we gave her a purified water popsicle to suckle, alternated with spoons of breastmilk (previously hand-expressed, since I haven't bought a pump yet) since she wouldn't latch on to nurse. Next we drew a tepid bath and I took her in and Randy helped trickle water over her (not too much too quickly since feverish babies can quickly become chilled). Finally we opened up all the windows, undressed her and kept her skin-to-skin, since adult body temeperature helps regulate infant temperatures.
She's sleeping right now, here's hoping her temp stays down.
